Overcome the fear of failure

Fear is irrational they say. There is no logic behind it and it makes us paralyzed sometimes. The best thing to do about it is to understand where it is coming from and then do something. Today is…

My Second Story Pitch

The Black Lives Matter movement and the LGBT community has been working together for years. Granted, the Black Lives Matter movement wasn’t called that in the 1960s, with the Civil Rights Movement ending in 1968, a year before the Stonewall riots. In fact, one of the major advocates was an African American transwoman, Marsha P. Johnson.

Marsha P. Johnson

Johnson was one of the first drag queens to go to the Stonewall Inn, after they began allowing women and drag queens inside. The Stonewall riots started in the early morning of June 28, 1969, in response to a police raid at the Stonewall Inn. Stonewall is a popular gay bar in New York. While the first two nights of rioting were the most intense, the clashes with police would result in a series of spontaneous demonstrations and marches through the gay neighborhoods of Greenwich Village for roughly a week afterwards.

On July 6, 1992, Johnson’s body was discovered floating in the Hudson River. Police ruled the death as a suicide, but many people insisted that Johnson was not suicidal. Some people believed Johnson had committed suicide due to an ever-increasing fragile state. However, Johnson’s close friend Sylvia Rivera claimed that they had a pact to “cross the ‘river Jordan’ (aka Hudson River) together.” Those who were close to Johnson considered the death suspicious; many claimed that while Johnson did struggle mentally, this did not manifest itself as suicidal.

Sylvia Rivera

For this story, I will be focusing on the history of the Black Lives Matter Movement and the LGBT community and what change it has brought in society. After establishing the history of both movements, I will be discussing how both groups intersect. After all of this is established, I am going to talk about both communities current issues and if it seems like there has been significant improvement for either community. I would like to see where the two communities' issues overlap. Finally, at the end of the article, I’m going to give the reader resources to look at if they want to support the communities. The main reason that I’m writing this article is to educate and inform the reader of both communities while spreading awareness.

I would like to promote this on Instagram with a condensed version of the story, while posting the full story on Medium. I also possibly may promote the story on Twitter.
