So what next?

After a couple of weeks reflexion and a well needed recharge in the Algarve sun, the question still remains what to do next. In the short term (i.e. this winter) I have a job lined up for a company…

The Good And Bad Side Of Group Assignments In University

Throughout our university lives, we have exposed to a range of different things including different clubs and societies that are unique in their own way, lecturers and tutors that like to entertain us and some that make us fall asleep in class, different brands of alcohol, people who are from different continents all over the world, and different types of group members. You may have experienced the group member that like to do things at the last minute because that people feels more motivated to get the work done. I wounder why. There is the group member that is a control freak that wants to get the best grade for the subject so that he or she can get into honours. There is the group member that has trust issues with people. There is the group member that will give everyone a low score on the group assignment review system in order for them to get the highest possible grade. There is also the group member that does not talk that much, talks all the time and interrupts everyone in the group who is trying to talk and explain their ideas, the highly motivated and committed ones that are great group members to work with, the great public speakers, the entrepreneurs, the middle aged ones, and the lazy one that we all hate. The risk of getting a lazy group members is the reason why so many at university hate group assignments with a passion and they prefer to do the assignment themselves instead of stressing over whether the lazy group member will even come to the next group meeting organised last week and whether they have made an attempt to complete the assigned group work.

The important thing to remember is to try your best to choose the right group members that are motivated and have the same goals as you grade wise and do not stress out if one of your group members are lazy. The lecturer or tutor can help you out if you are experiencing group conflict and they can quite possibly allow you to complete and get graded on only half the group assignment or give you an extension. This has happened to me before in one of my group assignments where two of my group members have not done any work and I talked to the lecturer about it and the lecturer allowed me to complete half the group assignment and only get graded on my individual work done. I managed to pass the group assignment. Thank goodness. Another time is when two of my group members filmed the large piece of the assignment two days before it was due and there was in no way that I could complete the individual portion of the assignment without not sleeping for two days. I was not going to do that because I had to study for my upcoming exams at the time. So I emailed my lecturer about what happened and the lecturer decided to give me a one week extension to complete the rest of the assignment. One week later, I completed the assignment and managed to pass the subject. On a final note, do not let group assignments stress you out too much. Your health is important.
