Experience over education

Furthermore, when analyzing the graph it is fairly evident that the line for the young workers tends to fluctuate through the years, generally peaking in times of economic distress such as the crisis of 1990 or 2008. The average line, however, maintains consistent throughout the entire graph. A logical explanation for this, is that most employers and directors, in times of crisis, have much more trust in age and experience than in workers that are younger with adapting ideals. Moreover, it seems to be that experience is one of the most crucial points employers not only in times of crisis but in general.

From a survey for employers by Irene Feijoo

In an survey performed by Irene Feijoo in which she asked employers on different aspects of what they prioritized when looking to hire a new employee, the general idea was that while not having a degree majorly limits your options, but it is not necessary to have one. Whats more, is that when asked if they would rather hire a young new prospect with a degree and great grade but with little to no experience in the field or a person who did not attend college but has been working in the appropriate field for around 5 years with good recommendation letters, 62 percent chose the latter. This goes to show that regardless of the social stigma that it is crucial to have a degree in order to be successful isn’t necessarily true. Even though it can be extremely useful, a degree alone is not going to get you a job.

From a survey for employers by Irene Feijoo

To sum up, over the past couple decades there has been an increase in underemployment, especially when it comes to recent college graduates. However the underemployment rate always drops as age increases, due to the fact that most of the time employers feel safer and have more trust in experienced workers, even if fundamentally a younger worker is more educated and could provide more to the company. Fortunately, work experience is an attainable thing, and if you, as a young worker, find a reputable internship or even a job in which you are underemployed, you can eventually begin broadening your job opportunities and rise to better work and pay. Ultimately what I am saying is that underemployment as a young worker is not a tragic, or even uncommon, occurrence, and with the right motivation it is surmountable.
