An Awesome Way to Offer Healthcare in Your Small Business

Do you own a small business? Do you struggle with providing healthcare to your employees — or just to yourself? It is EXPENSIVE.

Many small employers simply can not afford it — not even the bad plans. If your company has under fifty employees — you don’t have to.

But you want to.

You want to be able to provide insurance to those who work so hard for you. And let’s face it — you lose great candidates without having it.

This issue of health insurance has become a hot topic in homes, at work, and — of course — in politics.

Think about the last time you had a conversation about healthcare. Was it about costs? Was it about what is covered? Was it about political agendas? Most likely you have had one of these conversations within the past 30 days.

The bottom line — healthcare is important. And people would like access to affordable healthcare.

While the politicians are arguing it out, some physicians have decided to offer a different model of healthcare.

Direct Primary Care (DPC) is a subscription-based healthcare platform. You pay a monthly subscription fee to a physician and in turn, you get the time that you need with your physician. Your subscription fee covers visits and phone calls.

Different DPC practices offer different benefits. Some offer discounted and/or free prescription plans. Some offer all access to the Dr’s office with telehealth. Others have discounted lab fees, and some do home visits. The physician gets to decide how their practice is run.

More and more physicians are tired of being regulated by insurance companies. The number of appointments they need to have. What steps they need to take to treat an illness.

They want to get back to the reason they decided to practice medicine — they want to help their patients.

Many physicians are deciding to get back to the basics. This model allows them to treat people based on their ideologies.

Direct Primary Care is growing. Most likely there is a DPC practice near you. Doctors are taking back their time with patients and giving patients what they want — care at a reasonable cost.

You can expect:

You can find a DPC and figure out if it is a good fit for you and/or your company.

The premise of the DPC model is that patients will have access to a Doctor and will not wait until their issue gets out of hand. There will be fewer emergency room visits. In turn, less cost to the patient.

Also, as a small business owner — that equates to healthier employees. Less time out due to illness. Win-Win.

This is not catastrophic insurance. So, if you have a car accident, a heart attack, the birth of a child — it is not covered. You or your employees may want to look into catastrophic insurance plans so they are covered for these instances. Check with the DPC to see if they recommend a catastrophic insurance provider. There are cost-sharing plans and other “typical” insurance plans to explore.

This is not a pretax plan. Check with your accountant in your state but this is not a plan that individuals can deduct pre-tax. Depending on your state, as an employer, you may get some tax benefits.

This is not a Healthcare Savings Account (HSA) approved expenditure. You can still have a Healthcare Savings Account. You can not pay for your DPC with the HSA but you can pay for prescriptions, labs, and all other HSA qualified expenses.

This is not insurance. This is back to the basics of healthcare. This is a preventative healthcare plan. You have to go to the DPC clinic or Dr that you signed up with.

If you have a small business this is a great opportunity to offer yourself and/or your employees some healthcare options — without breaking the bank. Most subscription healthcare programs cost between $79- $150 per month. Even if you were just to cover half of that, it would provide healthcare to your employees.

Also, check with your DPC. They may offer discounted rates for businesses.

This is huge. Many small businesses struggle to afford insurance for their employees. If they can, it is costing them thousands of dollars to do so. This is a way for small business owners to get an affordable healthcare plan in place. Retain higher caliber employees. Provide peace of mind that their employees have some sort of coverage.

All you have to do is go to Google and type “DPC near me”. You may be surprised at how many you find!

If you have had an experience with a DPC practice, I would love to hear about it in the comments.
