Thinking of throwing your own BYOD party? Let’s talk about how to be the talk of the town, and not the laughing stock of the social season.

BYOD stands for Bring Your Own Device. This is a growing trend in workplaces along with

· BYOT (Bring Your Own Technology),

· BYOP (Bring Your Own Phone), and

· BYOPC (Bring Your Own PC).

This trend is all the rage this season due to the skyrocketing rates of consumer technology devices sales. Who doesn’t have a laptop and smartphone nowadays (I know I always buy the latest tech when it comes out… it might be a problem). Employers say that they are adopting BYOD policies because employees have grown used to bringing their own devices to work and/or they realize how much more productive employees are on our own devices. We all know what is really driving the change: Money, money, money, moneeey! It’s stuck in your head now and you have no one to blame but yourself for that. Companies have seen massive cost savings in not having to provide their employees with a smartphone, a computer and/or tablets (Who can blame them, really?).

Party Budget

I know who wants to talk about the numbers when you’re planning a party? I just want something fun to read but we need to put some thought into the budget.

· The BYOD market is on target to reach nearly $367 billion by 2022, up from just $30 billion in 2014, over 1000% growth (BetaNews).

· 59% of organizations allow employees to BYOD for work purposes. Another 13% had planned to allow use within a year, as seen below (Tech Pro Research).

· 87% of companies rely on their employees using personal devices to access business apps (Syntonic).

· As of 2016, six out of 10 companies had a BYOD-friendly policy in place (Syntonic).

Take Everything into Account When Planning the Perfect Guestlist

For employees the pros of BYOD are easy to spot: you get to work on the device that you are the most comfortable with (typing on someone else’s keyboard always kinda freaks me out, I am always thinking about how clean this is?). According to research from Sapho, the average worker saved 81 minutes/week by using a personal device at work and 71% said it improved their work-life balance (2017). Happy employees make the best guests at any party.

The downside for employees is that they are paying for their own devices, so if their devices break or there is a problem it’s their responsibility to fix it. Some companies will give you some sort of credit towards the purchase or replacement of devices, but how big of a hassle is that? Your guests are also, at least partially, responsible for the security of that device both from malware and from physical loss. That can be a real party foul and bring your BYOD party to a crashing end.

For employers, throwing a BYOD party is a double-edged sword. The company will realize massive cost savings of approximately $1300/employee/year in software and devices (according to Sapho) if the company implements a BYOD policy. Imagine if you are a CFO of a Fortune 500 company with 100,000 employees! I’m no mathematician, but that is some serious cabbage, making the BYOD decision a no-brainer! It can also save on total headcount, companies no longer need as many employees in purchasing, repair, or inventory control as they did when devices were company property.

As an employer, you think “I can have happier, more efficient staff that saves the company money. Why wouldn’t I throw a BYOD party? There must be a catch, there’s always a catch.” The major concern with allowing people to use their own devices is security.

Penny Hoelscher from Comparitech lists the concerns:

· Exposure from lost/stolen devices,

· data leakage, data loss

· insecure usage, malicious apps

· rogue apps

· cross-contamination

These concerns can bring down your network or worse, leave your network open to infiltration from malicious sources leaking information both personal and professional. Think about it, uninvited guests crashing your party and ruining what was the social event of the season. No cost savings is worth that. Ask any CIO, this is the type of thing that keep them up at night (nightmares about domain crashes and data leaks are a real problem for IT professionals).

There might be an even higher cost that most people don’t realize when allowing staff to bring in their own devices. “Even though IT hardware spend can potentially be reduced with a BYOD approach, it may cost more for a company to integrate and support a diverse range of employee devices.” Says Mark Coates (EMEA VP at Good Technology) points out: “Android devices can be complex to manage as there are just so many different flavors — a huge variety of devices and a number of different versions of the operating system.” Honestly, I feel like this guy just wasn’t invited, I’m just saying. We know that security related costs are the negatives in throwing your BYOD party. How do we find a solution? For many employers the solution is to have a well-defined plan for how staff can access the network and how to deal with any potential threats from malware or lost devices. Keeping your guests safe and happy.

Planning for the BYOD Party!

The trend of the BYOD party doesn’t look like it can be stopped so let’s plan the best one we can! By 2018, employee-owned devices will be used in the workplace twice as often as devices issued by companies (according to research published by Gartner, I think they know what they are talking about). If you didn’t just skip to the end of this post, then you know BYOD provides its own unique benefits and challenges. With all trends and policies, the ideal situation is to have the benefits outweigh the challenges, so simple and yet so difficult. The only way for this to happen is to have the right plan in place for implementation, usage, and dealing with the challenges that arise as your party goes, “all night long, all night…”.

There are many things to consider and there is no “one size fits all” plan when throwing your BYOD party. Here are some general guidelines you can follow to make the transition easier:

1. Maintaining control over network connectivity

2. Maintaining control over network security

3. Maintaining control over data

4. Planning for a lost or stolen device

5. What devices to allow

6. Being able to scan the BYODs

7. Plan for it all to go wrong
