Rant of the Day

Life is still not fair

Here’s my tirade, rant whatever you want to call it for the day.

Even though my parents said to me repeatedly when I was growing up that “life is not fair” (and I have gone on to say that to my kids) I believe that things should be more equitable than they are.

On a global scale, it seems wrong that simply being born in certain parts of the world can relegate a person to a shorter life span perhaps peppered with spells of hunger or actual starvation before they die. Or maybe being a woman born in a country where you aren’t entitled to education and have to live as someone with fewer rights than your male counterparts. Gay in a country where acting as yourself could land you in jail or worse.

I am privileged. Born white, cis-gendered in a country that is considered one of the better places to live in the world. Good universal health care, a democratic government, and good odds for long life. Arrived into a family that was not wealthy but by the time I came along had enough of everything.

My anger at the world today is not for myself, or even those in the other places on the planet. It’s directed at some of the humans in my communities. And it’s related to how some of us are assholes, and the nicer ones of those are still sometimes inconsiderate and intolerant. Those are the topic of a different story.

I’m fired up today in particular because someone I know with diversibilities is suffering as a result of a second online scam that happened this week.

The first was related to an attempt to find housing. Rentals are extremely hard to find at present where I live and in many parts of my province and country. The competition for them is stiff: double-income professional couples compete for the same spaces as those working fast food or living on disability payments. It is simply no contest. Those who own homes that they rent out are asking top dollar and often have checklists of requirements. Proof of local income, past years' income tax statements, criminal records and credit checks. Add another person to the rental suite and they sometimes increase the rent even though technically that person is not adding anything to their costs especially if tenants pay their own hydro.
