Becoming an IT Product Manager

If you are thinking about changing your career path or starting a new one in the field of product management, well, since you are here, you are halfway there. This article covers the intricacies of product management and courses to enroll for if you want to learn more about the field.

A Product Manager in an organization helps his/her employer identify a product — based on market needs — to align the company's business goals (financial, customer retention, competitive, scale-up, etc.) with the identified product. For a Product Manager to achieve this, he/she would need to develop products by identifying potential products; conducting market research; generating product requirements; determining specifications, production timetables, pricing, and time-integrated plans for product introduction; developing marketing strategies, etc.

There is a number of skills expected of a Product Manager. These shall be discussed in detail in the proceeding paragraphs. The skills in question comprise the mix of technical, business, finance, and people’s management skills. Although not too deep in all of these except in the area of product conceptualization, prototyping, communications, research, pricing, acceptability, scaling, etc.
