Do numbers really make a difference in our lives?

So what exactly is a number? Well, as we know, the entire world judges us on numbers. But it also depends on what context are we talking about. Are we talking in respect of education, fitness, age or wealth?

People think that the numbers are everything. Whether we talk about weight or marks or age or whatever. They say a single sheet of paper which has a fraction or percentage written on it can’t decide our future; but it does. They say weight is just a number but they still judge you by your weight. They say age is just a number then why can’t everyone do what they want to do regardless of their age. They say money is not as important as happiness but here again our happiness is also amount on money we possess.

People forget that numbers were created to just have more precise judgment of things and not people.

Basically, in my opinion, there are 2 types of cases:

1. When numbers don’t really make a difference

2. When numbers do make a difference

In cases where weight, age, height, etc. are involved the number doesn’t matter much. Like I have heard that people have spent their entire life in some weight loss program just to lose some kgs; does that really make a difference. Or, the number of movies we see in a year, does that really matter? Further, the number of chores we do doesn’t matter either (until all the chores are finished).

But in cases of money or time, number does mean a lot. Like if we have to catch a plane at a particular time and we reach at some other time, obviously we will miss the plane. But there you can’t start arguing that time is just a number. Similarly, when we are buying something from a shop and pay a different amount of money than the value of the item, we cannot argue with the statement that money is just a number (unless we are bargaining, which is a different thing altogether).

So, do you still say number is just a number? Which other scenarios do you think where numbers do not matter at all?
